Digital marketing

The goal of digital marketing is to put your business in front of people when they are searching for your products or services online. There are many different elements to digital marketing and we will outline below what you need to do to achieve this and generate more leads for your business.

Obviously, just generating leads isn’t enough. You will need turn these leads into actual sales. Still, finding good quality leads is a big part of making sales, and digital marketing can be really helpful in doing that.

The most important first step is find out what keywords people are using to search for your services and products.

Keywords

Keywords refer to specific words or phrases that people use to search for specific services or products.

It’s important to find out how many searches there are for each word each month in the UK. Google publishes this information and you can easily find it by going to Wordstream where you can add the words to the software and you will see other potential keywords as well.

It is also possible to put your local competitor’s website address into Wordstream and see what keywords they are being found for.

Make a list of all these keywords, it will be important to create a page on your website for each of these keywords and optimise it for these keywords.

Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile is the most crucial component of your local marketing strategy because it allows you to establish a prominent online presence in your local community and your business can show up on Google Maps and more importantly the aim has to be to show up in the “3-Pack”, shown opposite.

The 3-Pack is shown close to the top of search results when there is a local intent by the searcher.

Approximately 40% of all searchers will click on one of the three businesses listed in the 3-Pack.

Google has published that there are three key parts to their algorithm:

“Local results are based primarily on relevance, distance, and prominence. A combination of these factors helps us find the best match for your search.”

Google Business Profile optimisation

There is a long list of things you need to do to full optimise your listing including:

  • Ensure all fields are completed on the form
  • Include your top keywords in your short and long description
  • Select the correct Primary Category for your business – this is a very important ranking factor
  • Add up to 10 relevant Secondary Categories for your business
  • Add at least 1 “post” a day (these are not the same as social media)
  • Create a “Google generated website”
  • Add 50 original branded photographs about the business
  • Linking YouTube videos of the outside and inside of the business
  • Add 20 “questions and answers”

Other things that helps your Google Business Profile optimisation

There are a number of related things you can do to improve your Google Business Profile ranking including:

  • Creating a YouTube channel and upload optimised videos about your business
  • Check where your competitor has local citations (mainly online directories). You can do this by doing the following search:

“full company name” “company post code” -site:url
    e.g. “JMW Solicitors LLP” “M3 3HG” -https://www.jmw.co.uk

  • Get as many high quality reviews on your profile and ensure you respond to them all, good or bad
  • Create a Bing Places for Business and Apple Business Connect listings

Localise your website by creating Local Service Pages

In essence Local Service Pages are dedicated pages added to your website that are optimised for all of your top keywords (normally the top 4 or 5 will suffice) that form a content silo of your services in each town you serve. For example, if you are a painter and decorator in Guildford and you work within a twenty-mile radius you would determine the most popular keywords which are:

  • Painter
  • Painting
  • Painting and decorating
  • Decorating
  • Decorator

You then create an optimised page of content for each of these for each of these towns:

  • Guildford
  • Woking
  • Leatherhead
  • Godalming
  • Cobham

A few things to remember when creating Local Service Pages:

  • Write your copy on each page using all related keywords
  • Remember to interlink your local service pages with pages on your website
  • They do not have to be shown on the site navigation, so long as you add them to the site map so they are indexed by the search engines
  •  Make each page relevant for the town you are optimising for by adding local content

Frequently Asked Questions

Opposite are some of the more common questions we get asked about digital marketing.

If your question is not answered please feel free to contact us.

Digital marketing encompasses all online marketing efforts to promote products or services using digital channels such as search engines, social media, email, and websites. For local businesses, digital marketing is crucial because it allows them to reach and engage with their target audience more effectively. It enhances visibility, builds brand awareness, and drives local traffic, ultimately leading to increased sales and customer loyalty.

SEO helps local businesses improve their visibility in search engine results, making it easier for potential customers to find them online. By optimising their website for relevant local keywords, creating high-quality content, and building local citations, businesses can increase their search rankings. Higher search rankings lead to more organic traffic, increased foot traffic to physical locations, and greater overall credibility and trust with potential customers.

Social media is a powerful tool for local businesses to connect with their community, engage with customers, and promote their products or services. By maintaining active profiles on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, businesses can share updates, respond to customer inquiries, and run targeted advertising campaigns. Social media also helps build brand awareness, drive website traffic, and gather valuable customer feedback, which can inform future marketing strategies.

Email marketing allows local businesses to communicate directly with their customers and prospects. By collecting email addresses through website sign-ups or in-store promotions, businesses can send newsletters, promotional offers, and updates to their subscribers. Email marketing helps keep the business top-of-mind, drives repeat business, and nurtures customer relationships. It is also a cost-effective way to promote new products, events, and special offers.

Google Business Profile (GBP) is a free tool that allows local businesses to manage their online presence across Google, including Search and Maps. By creating and optimizing a GBP profile, businesses can provide essential information such as their address, phone number, hours of operation, and customer reviews. A well-optimised GBP profile improves local search visibility, makes it easier for customers to find and contact the business, and enhances the business’s credibility through positive reviews and accurate information.

Local businesses can measure the success of their digital marketing efforts using various metrics and tools. Key performance indicators (KPIs) such as website traffic, search engine rankings, social media engagement, email open rates, and conversion rates provide insights into the effectiveness of marketing strategies. Tools like Google Analytics, social media analytics, and email marketing platforms offer detailed reports and data to track performance. Regularly reviewing and analysing these metrics helps businesses refine their strategies, allocate resources more effectively, and achieve better results over time.
